Summer is here, and for RVers, that means it's time to hit the road! With campgrounds filling up fast, it's important to plan your next trip ASAP. Here are a list of campgrounds that still have availability as of June 2022.
As camping continues to grow in popularity, it’s becoming increasingly important for RVers to reserve their campsites weeks, if not months, in advance, especially for summer camping trips.
But RVers who are willing to explore some of the nation’s less traveled roads will be pleased to find that are still some campgrounds with available campsites this summer, and they’re located in beautiful places.
Consider Lassen RV Resort in McArthur, California. Located in a remote area of Northern California, the 68-acre campground has many oaks and pine trees and is a convenient base camp for day trips to McArthur-Burney Falls, about 25 minutes away, as well as Ahjumawi Lava Springs State Park, which is accessible only by boat (bring your own boat/kayak or canoe!). Lassen Volcanic National Park and Lava Beds National Monument are roughly an hour away. Lassen RV Resort also has several onsite trails and offers art activities and a beer garden on weekends.
Having trouble finding a campground with summer vacancy near the Grand Canyon? Try Kaibab Camper Village in Jacob Lake, Arizona.
The remote location of this 8,000-foot campground, 30 miles north of the North Rim of the Grand Canyon, make this campground a welcome discovery for summer travelers who have not been able to find any available campsites near the Grand Canyon’s heavily visited South Rim. The campground features RV and tent sites with 30 amp electrical connections as well as water and sewer service, coin operated laundry, shower facilities and a camp store. A shuttle service is also available to take visitors to the North Rim. The campground is also just over an hour’s drive from the entrance to Zion National Park and about a two-hour drive from Bryce Canyon Canyon National Park.
In Colorado, campgrounds with summer availability as of early June included:
Aspen Acres Campground in Rye: This campground can be used as a basecamp for a variety of outdoor activities, including hiking, mountain biking and fishing at neighboring Lake Isabel and other locations.
La Veta Pines RV Park in La Veta: Located at 7,000 feet at the base of the Spanish Peaks, this park offers cool summers and is close to restaurants, shops and art galleries in the town of La Veta.
Moving across the country, several parks in Michigan still had summer availability as of early June, though they were booking up quickly. Campgrounds in scenic areas with sites available include:
Lake of Dreams Campground in Merill: This campground features a 4-acre lake with a sandy beach Activities include swimming, paddle boating, hiking, and biking. The park also has two ponds with catch-and-release fishing.
Mackinaw Mill Creek Camping in Mackinaw City: Situated on the shores of Lake Huron, this campground offers views of the Straits of Mackinac, the Mackinac Bridge and Mackinac Island as well as Mackinaw City, St. Ignace, Round Island and Bois Blanc Island.
Manistique Lakeshore Campground in Manistique: Located in Michigan’s Upper Penninsula on the shores of Lake Michigan, this park is within easy walking and driving distance of many unique attractions, including lighthouses and waterfalls, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Kitch-iti-Kipi, Michigan’s largest freshwater spring.
In the Adirondack Mountains of New York, families may have a good chance of finding campsites and park model RV rentals at Camp Tin Box RV Resort in North Hudson. The park features three outdoor swimming pools and rents tubes for those who would like to enjoy floating in a shallow section of the Schroon River. Other amenities include miniature golf, a miniature train ride, gem mining, gaga ball, a playground and arcade games.
In western New York, Trout Run Camp Resort in Wellsville, still had sites available for summer as of late May. The park features a new splash pad and new park model RV rental. Other amenities include miniature train rides, a heated saltwater swimming pool, gaga ball, and laser tag. The park also offers themed weekend activities. Easy day trips from the park include Corning, home of the Corning Museum of Glass and the downtown Gaffer District, and the Enchanted Mountains of Western New York.
Kayaking and canoeing enthusiasts as well as hikers and bicyclists may want to consider Red Rock Ponds RV Resort in Holley, which is situated on the Erie Canal. The park can also be used as a base camp for day trips to Buffalo and Niagara Falls.
In the Catskills Mountains, one park will summer vacancy in early June is Covered Bridge Campsite in Livingston Manor. The park offers world-class fly fishing on the Willowemoc River. The Catskill Fly Fishing Center and Museum is also in Livingston Center.
Moving south to Florida, campgrounds, RV parks and resorts with summertime vacancy as of early June included:
Camp Mack in Lake Wales: Located in the heart of the Kissimmee Chain of Lakes, this campground offers RV sites and rental accommodations, including park model RVs. Amenities include restaurants, boat and kayak rentals, a swimming pool and clubhouse as well as professional fishing guides and charters.
Camp Margaritaville in Auburndale: This family resort halfway between Tampa and Orlando features RV sites and park model RV rentals. Amenities include a zero entry, heated swimming pool, a nine-hole artificial turf putting course, a tiki hut and bar, a splash pad and activities for all ages, including basketball, corn hole and yoga. The resort also has separate dog parks for large and small dogs and a dog wash station.
Destin West RV Resort in Fort Walton Beach: This park complements its swimming pool with access to Choctawhatchee Bay with activities including fishing, kayaking, and stand up paddle boarding.
Ragan’s Family Campground in Madison: This campground features organized family activities on weekends as well as a water zone with a zero-entry swimming pool and a 60-foot water slide. The park also has a two-acre catch-and-release fishing lake that is stocked with sterile grass carp, largemouth bass, bluegill and catfish. Kayak and paddle board rentals are also available. ATV trails are available as well as games, including gaga ball, horseshoes and disc golf.
Of course, these are just a handful of campgrounds, RV parks and resorts across the country that had campsites available in the summer months as of late May. While it’s convenient to limit web searches online, some park operators recommend calling them directly to find out about campsite availability and recent cancellations that could free up campsites that were previously booked.
