Recipe: Dutch Oven Chili

Enjoy this campground-style Dutch Oven chili recipe!

Customize this with your favorite chili recipe! This recipe focuses on the Dutch oven cooking method.

Ingredients

  • 12” Lodge footed Dutch oven
  • Campfire coals or charcoal
  • Chili ingredients (your go-to recipe)
  • Metal feed bin or galvanized tub (Tractor Supply or similar)
  • Long-handled tongs or gloves
  • Lid lifter or heat-resistant handle

Instructions

  1. Set Up the Heat Base: Place your Dutch oven in a metal feed bin to contain the heat and elevate the pot off the ground.
  2. Coal Placement for Even Cooking
    •  Arrange hot coals around the outside of the Dutch oven, not directly underneath it. This allows for radiant heat to evenly cook the chili.
    • Add coals to the top of the lid to direct heat downward and create an oven effect.
  3. Simmer & Stir: Add your chili ingredients to the Dutch oven, cover with the lid, and let it simmer. Stir occasionally and adjust coals as needed.
  4. Cook Time: Chili will typically cook in about 45 minutes to 1 hour, depending on heat and volume.
  5. Enjoy by the Campfire! Serve with cornbread, tortilla chips, or a dollop of sour cream. No wrong way to camp—or cook—like a Girl Camper!
