Recipe: Making Grilled Cheese at the Campground

Follow this recipe and enjoy a delicious grilled cheese at the campground.

Ingredients

  • 2 slices bakery sourdough bread, trimmed to fit pie iron
  • 1 Tbsp seasoned butter
  • 1–2 tsp olive oil (for greasing pie iron)
  • 1/3 cup shredded gouda cheese (from a block, not pre-shredded)
  • Seasoned butter mix (1 stick unsalted butter, room temp; garlic powder; salt; pepper; oregano (or your favorite herbs))

Instructions:

Serves: 1–2
Prep Time: 10 minutes
Cook Time: 5–7 minutes

  1. Prep the Pie Iron: Lightly grease the inside of your cast-iron pie iron with olive oil.
  2. Season the Bread: Spread seasoned butter on the outer sides of each bread slice.
  3. Assemble the Sandwich:
    1. Place one slice of buttered bread (butter side down) into the pie iron
    2. Top with freshly shredded Gouda cheese.
    3. Add the second slice of bread, butter side up.
  4. Cook:
    1. Close and seal the pie iron.
    2. Cook over hot coals or on a grill (like a Weber if there's a fire ban), flipping occasionally.
    3. Cook 3–5 minutes or until golden brown and cheese is melted.
  5. Serve Hot:
    1. Carefully open the pie iron and remove your grilled cheese.
    2. Serve with a bowl of hot tomato soup for the ultimate campground meal.

QUICK TIP: Pre-make and freeze seasoned butter at home in small Ziploc bags. Just snip and squeeze at camp!
