Five Miles From Famous: Cadillac Mountain

Overview

Catch America’s first sunrise from famous Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park! Many travelers flock here for that iconic moment, and here’s a little-known fact: Cadillac Mountain is the first place to see the sunrise in the U.S. from October through March.

Acadia is the most visited U.S. national park, attracting about 4 million visitors annually, but it’s relatively small. You’ll find iconic rocky coastlines, classic Maine scenery, lobster rolls from many roadside stops, and all things blueberry.

Everyone knows the big landmarks and must-see spots where crowds gather. But the real magic of Acadia is often just five miles from famous, where you’ll find quieter, more authentic experiences.

Where To Stay

If you want to wake up to the beautiful western bay, book a stay at Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA. Located on the western bay, the campground offers Oceanside RV sites with partial hookups, but sites book quickly. You’ll have easy access to local shopping, downtown Bar Harbor just a few miles away, and roadside lobster rolls.

Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA also offers full hookup options, 50-and-30 amp service, water, electric, pull-through spaces, back-in sites, and more.

Campground Recommendation:

Day 1

Foodie Fun

Eat Like a Local

Some would argue that visiting Maine is quite the culinary experience. While the big rave over visiting Acadia could be the lobster rolls, you may also want to try the famous popover at Jordan Pond House. This iconic spot is known for its buttery, eggy pastries, which are best enjoyed with jam and tea while sitting outside overlooking the Bubble Mountains. (Reserve in advance, as they often book up quickly!). You can also visit Jordan Pond House in downtown Bar Harbor at Stadium Coffee.

If you’re seeking great farm-to-kitchen meals, visit Sweet Pea’s Farm Kitchen. Dedicated to supporting local farms and farmers, this seasonal restaurant sources food locally. Known for unique cuisine, you will find their famous Beer Cake, as well as some of the best pizza.

One More Recommendation

  • A trip to Maine isn’t complete without blueberries, and while most restaurants offer their own unique blueberry dishes, don’t miss the homemade blueberry ice cream from C-Ray Lobster in Bar Harbor. They serve multiple local favorites featuring lobster as well as a blueberry soda and the official state treat, whoopie pies.

Day 2

Off the Beaten Path

Schoodic Peninsula

One outdoor recreation highlight are the tidepools at Schoodic Peninsula in Winter Haven, 25 miles from Acadia on Mount Desert Island. It’s quieter and great for photos, tide pooling, and picnics. Schoodic Peninsula is known for dramatic waves, so stay away from the cliff edges.

Momo's

While in Bar Harbor, venture 35 minutes to Momo’s in Ellsworth, ME. This unique 24/7 roadside cheesecake spot operates on the honor system and offers up to 60 homemade flavors. Midnight cravings welcome!

Day 3

A Unique Destination

Visit Thunder Hole

This small, natural inlet in the granite is a 30-minute drive from Bar Harbor/Oceanside KOA. When waves rush in, trapped air and water cause a booming sound like thunder. The best time to hear it is two hours before high tide, or during/right before a storm.

Quick Tip!

  • Don’t stand too close, or you might get drenched.

Final Thoughts

When planning your visit, remember that Acadia’s true magic is a few miles from the famous spots. Explore beyond the obvious —unique experiences await just five miles from famous.
