Assateague Island National Seashore

Located just 37 miles from Millsboro, DE, stretching along the Atlantic coast of Maryland and Virginia, is the hidden gem that still allows nature to call the shots. The unique feature of Assateague Island National Seashore is the wild horses that roam freely on these wild, windswept barrier islands. Once descendants of domesticated horses, these feral horses have adapted to the coastal environment.

While the story of how they arrived on the Island is a bit of a mystery, they have lived on the island for hundreds of years and have acclimated to the salty conditions. You will find two entrances to this park, one on the Maryland side and one on the Virginia side, and both manage two herds of horses. There is also other wildlife like Silka and white-tailed deer, a variety of birds, and marine life.

TIP: Don’t forget to bring your America the Beautiful card to get in for free.
