How to Make a Failed at Fishing Frittata in Your Cast Iron Skillet

If you've ever gone fishing and failed to catch anything, don't worry – you're not alone. If you've got a cast-iron skillet, you can still make a delicious meal out of your failed fishing trip! In this recipe, we'll show you how to make a "failed at fishing frittata" in your trusty cast-iron skillet. This dish is easy to prepare and uses items you can easily stock up on in advance - just in case your efforts are unrewarded on the lake.

What is a frittata? 

A frittata is similar to an omelet, but it's cooked slowly on the stovetop or campfire grate instead of being flipped in a pan. This allows you to add a lot of different ingredients – like veggies, meats, and cheeses – and results in a hearty dish that's perfect for brunch, dinner, or even breakfast-for-dinner.Image removed.

How do you transport eggs when camping? 

The best way to transport eggs when camping is to use an egg holder or carton. You can also place them in a cooler with ice packs, but make sure they're well-insulated so they don't get too cold.

If you know you are only going to eat them scrambled, it is a good idea to crack them into a container. The whites and yolks will stay attached, but they take up less space, make less of a mess for clean up, and you have no worries about any breaking on you!

Where do you find dehydrated hashbrowns in the grocery store?

Dehydrated hashbrowns are usually located in the same aisle as the other dehydrated foods, such as instant rice, instant potatoes, and ramen noodles. Sometimes they're also sold in the breakfast aisle near the oatmeal and cereal. If you can't find them, ask a grocery store employee – they'll be able to point you in the right direction.

  • One package of dehydrated hashbrowns
  • 2 large cans tuna- drained
  • a handful of fresh spinach
  • 8 eggs - scrambled
  • 1 cup grated cheddar cheese
  • 1 tsp dried oregano

Frittata Tutorial

Reconstitute the hashbrowns in your skillet per package directions. Add the other ingredients to your skillet, stir to combine/blend.

Cook for 2-3 minutes until it is starting to set around the edges. What does this mean? This means that you should see the egg starting to cook and pull away from the sides of the skillet.

Using a rubber spatula or wooden spoon, slightly lift around the edges to allow some of the uncooked mixture to run under the sides.

Cook for another 2-3 minutes or until it is set around the edges but still soft in the middle.

Invert the frittata onto a plate and slide back into the pan for another 3 minutes or until almost cooked in the middle. You can skip this step and simply move the pan into a 350-degree oven for 10-15 minutes if you want to finish it indoors.

Remove from the heat and allow the frittata to stand for 5 minutes in the pan. Top with a little more grated cheddar and serve with sliced firm tomatoes - like Romas

What if I don't have a cast iron skillet?

If you don't have a cast iron skillet, you can use any type of large frying pan or even a Dutch oven. Just make sure it's big enough to fit all of the ingredients – you may need to cook the frittata in batches if your pan is on the smaller side.

What if I can't find dehydrated hashbrowns?

If you can't find dehydrated hashbrowns, you can use fresh or frozen ones – just cook them according to package directions before adding them to the frittata. You could also try using diced potatoes, sweet potatoes, or even rice.

I don't like fish. Can I use something else in this recipe?

If you don't like fish, you can use diced ham, cooked sausage, or even tofu. Just make sure to cook it before adding it to the frittata. You could also try using a different type of cheese – mozzarella, Swiss, or Gruyere would all be delicious.

Do I have to use spinach?

No, you don't have to use spinach – you can use any type of leafy green or even diced bell peppers. If you're not a fan of vegetables, you could also leave them out entirely.

How do I know when the frittata is done?

The frittata is done when it's set around the edges but still soft in the middle. You can also insert a toothpick or knife into the center – if it comes out clean, the frittata is ready.

  • 1 box dehydrated hash browns
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 2 large cans tuna, drained
  • Handful of fresh spinach, roughly chopped
  • 8 eggs, whisked
  • 1 cup cheddar cheese shreds (used white cheddar here)
  • 1 teaspoon dry oregano
  • Roma tomatoes, sliced, for serving


Reconstitute hash browns per package directions.

In a large cast iron skillet heat 2 tablespoons vegetable oil over medium high heat.

Cook hash browns 2-3 minutes then stir in oregano, tuna, spinach, and half of the cheese shreds. 

Pour eggs over hash brown mixture.

When eggs are setting at the edges, lift slightly for uncooked egg to go to sides 2-3 minutes.

Invert onto plate, return to skillet and cook an additional 2-3 minutes.

Remove from heat and sprinkle on remaining cheese.

Serve with sliced tomatoes and enjoy!
